Poll Wiltshire Description

The Poll Wiltshire is a polled, wool shedding prime lamb breed. The short wool is shed annually in Spring and early Summer. Shedding begins on the neck, chest and shoulders. The Wiltshire Horn is large framed, lean and well muscled, producing sires for crossing with ewes of any other breed or cross bred ewes for optimal prime lamb production. Rams are over 100kg and ewes over 80kg. There is no shearing, crutching or mulesing and they have minimal fly problems. They are low maintenance and the easy care sheep. They are very hardy and long lived. The mothers are excellent with lambing percentages up to 150%. They are ideal for the organic sheep producers. The meat is top quality and has an excellent flavour. The Poll Wiltshire has excellent wool shedding characteristics due to having no back crossing. They are 100% Purebred Wiltshire Horn and have the same characteristics as the Wiltshire Horn, without the horns.

The Registered Poll Wiltshire has only two classes:

Class One -
Poll Wiltshires with double poll genes, proven by DNA and Parentage testing and from registered Wiltshire Horn flocks will be accepted as Class One Poll Wiltshire Sheep. Evidence that the poll genes have originated from the Byarlea Poll Wiltshire flock is essential and will only by accepted.
Class Two -
Poll Wiltshires with single poll genes, proven by DNA and Parentage testing and from registered Wiltshire Horn flocks will be accepted as Class Two Poll Wiltshire Sheep. Evidence that the Poll Genes have originated from the Byarlea Poll Wiltshire flock is essential and will only be accepted. It is important to understand the significance of the poll gene which has naturally occurred in the Byarlea flock and why the Poll Wiltshire breed is distinctly different from other Poll breeds developed by cross breeding. The intention is to breed Poll animals from Wiltshire Horn flocks to retain all of the characteristics of the Wiltshire Horn breed in the Poll Wiltshire and therefore no crossbreeding is permitted. All Poll Wiltshire sheep must be bred from registered Class One or Class Two Poll Wiltshires. Only registered Poll Wiltshire or Wiltshire Horn Sheep may be used in breeding programs. No other breeds (in particular African breeds) are permitted and there will be no other Appendix flocks. All registered Poll Wiltshire Sheep must be DNA and Parentage tested and bred from Registered Poll Wiltshire Class One or Class Two (originating from Byarlea flock) or Wiltshire Horn sheep. Otherwise they can only be considered to be commercial sheep.

Each stud must include in their breeding program a strategy to reduce the incidence of inbreeding. Continued out crossing to registered Wiltshire Horn sheep is essential.
